Quietly Sheltered is a landscape with a lake resting between the surrounding land beneath a wide, changing sky.
At first, it can appear quite simple. The water draws our eyes into the landscape, with grasses around its edges and trees further away along the horizon. But the longer I look, the more I begin to notice the smaller changes in colour, light and texture across the land and water.
I wanted the lake to feel sheltered by the landscape around it without feeling enclosed. There is still a sense of openness, particularly in the sky and the view beyond the water, but the curves of the land seem to hold the lake within them.
Deep blues, softened greens, earthy browns and greys move through the painting, with the colours changing gradually rather than one part of the landscape feeling separate from another.
