From the Deep — Beneath the Surface

The ocean holds a different kind of silence.
Not an empty silence, but one that feels full of life. Light softens beneath the surface. Movement becomes slower. Everything seems to drift at its own unhurried pace.
When I began painting From the Deep, I wasn't simply drawn to the majesty of whales. I was equally moved by their fragility. For all their immense size, there is something deeply gentle about the way they care for their young.
I wanted to capture that quieter relationship.
As I painted, I found myself returning to the space between the mother and her calf. They move together without urgency, held within the vastness of the ocean. The deeper blues became less about darkness and more about creating a feeling of protection, allowing them to exist within a place that feels calm and secure.
Perhaps that is what stayed with me most.
Not simply the whales themselves, but the quiet connection between them. A sense of love, trust and safety that needs very little explanation.
The ocean continues its slow, familiar rhythm.
Together, they disappear into the blue.
