Where Land Meets Memory — Original Oil Painting

Where Land Meets Memory — Original Oil Painting

Sold

Where Land Meets Memory was inspired by Man O’War Bay on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast and the way a landscape can remain in our memory long after we have left it.

I wasn't trying to recreate the coastline exactly. I was interested in what remained when I thought back to it. The sweep of the cliffs, the curve of the bay, the open sea beyond and the way the land seemed to fall away towards the water.

Coastlines are continually changing, even when the cliffs in front of us appear permanent. The sea moves against the land, the weather changes it and the light can completely alter the way we see it.

I wanted some of that movement between what feels permanent and what is always changing to remain within the painting. The softer transitions between the land, sea and sky allowed the remembered landscape to develop without every detail needing to be precisely described.

Where Land Meets Memory is part of the Quiet Presence collection.
