The Black Art Placemat | Jennifer F

The Black Art Placemat

Created from my original painting The Black, this placemat features a black stallion emerging from a dark background, with the light catching his face, mane and muscular form.

I've always been fascinated by horses and the combination of strength and gentleness they possess. They are powerful animals, yet there can be something remarkably soft about their expression, particularly around their eyes. In this painting, I wanted to capture both sides of that character, allowing much of the stallion to remain in shadow while the lighter details gradually become more noticeable.

For this placemat design, I've kept the original painting within its decorative frame against a black background, allowing the stallion to remain the centre of attention. I particularly like how the surrounding darkness draws the eye towards his face, where the smallest changes in light reveal more of his expression.

Part of my From the Shadows – Homeware Collection, this placemat offers another way to enjoy the artwork beyond the original painting.
