Created from my original painting Beneath the Light, this hardback journal brings together the changing light of a cloudy sky and the deeper blues of the sea beneath it.
In the original painting, I was interested in the way light moves through the clouds and changes the appearance of the water below. The sky is full of softer greys and shifting shapes, while the sea has darker areas, brighter reflections and the movement of waves along the surface. I particularly like the contrast between the two, and how much there is to notice when you spend a little longer looking.
For the journal, I've used separate sections of the painting rather than reproducing it as one complete image. The clouds sit across the upper part of the cover, with the darker ocean beneath, while a blue-grey colour taken from the artwork provides space for the title between them.
The surrounding colour continues around the spine and onto the back, which I've kept simple. I wanted the sea and sky to remain the main features of the design, allowing their different colours and movement to work together.
