About the Original Painting

Before the Rain began with the idea of a storm cloud gathering over an imagined landscape.

I have always been fascinated by the way the colours around us begin to change as a storm approaches. The sky becomes darker, the landscape responds to the changing light and there is a period of anticipation before the rain finally begins.

The storm cloud came first in this painting, with the rolling fields developing beneath it to create a sense of distance and scale. The tree to the right became another important part of the landscape, standing beneath the approaching weather as everything around it begins to change.
