Where the Sky Breaks — Original Oil Painting
Where the Sky Breaks — Original Oil Painting
Where the Sky Breaks began with a photograph of a tornado that I found online. I was immediately drawn to the storm, but also to everything happening around it.
The tornado descends from a turbulent sky towards the land below, surrounded by deep greys and cooler storm colours. Rain falls through a luminous area of the sky, while a line of lightning appears in the distance and the grasses below move with the weather.
I particularly enjoyed working with the contrasts within this painting. The warmth of the field sits beneath the cooler sky, areas of darkness make the rainfall appear brighter and the movement within the tornado and grasses is balanced by quieter areas around them.
The tornado is an enormous and potentially destructive force, yet there was still something extraordinarily beautiful about the light, colour and movement within the scene. It was that contradiction that kept drawing me back as I painted.
Where the Sky Breaks is part of the From the Shadows collection.
