About the Painting
A wooden boat rests above the shoreline while beyond it the sea continues to move.
In Beneath the Light, deep navy water meets flashes of electric blue, muted greens and a sky filled with shifting layers of blue-grey, white and soft warmth. Light moves through both sea and cloud, bringing luminosity to a scene that might otherwise feel dark.
The boat remains still while everything around it seems to be moving. Waves gather and break along the shore. Clouds stretch across the sky. The horizon sits quietly between them.
That relationship between stillness and movement is central to the painting. So too is the relationship between darkness and light. The deepest tones allow the blues and pale areas to become more luminous, drawing attention to small moments of brightness within the wider landscape.
Part of the From the Shadows collection, Beneath the Light reflects my continued interest in the quieter places where light appears within darkness.
